2011 REUNION 31ST ENGINEER BATTALION
We have ubdergone several diffrent sites members have chosen thru e-mails to John Frye and the membership have other
potential locations are Branson, MO; Nashville, TN; and San Antonio, TX the east coast Maine is still in the running I took it out by mistake. Please contact the board members let them know what you would like. This is the time for all who visit the 31st website to get vocal about the location and date for our reunions. Email requests for suggestions on location and timing have not produced much response -- it would truly be very helpful if more comments would come from those who would like to attend.
Let me know your thoughts on 2011; if possible, prior to 31 July 2010.
Many thanks and on guard, Demonstratus, Essayons!
John Frye

ITEM 1.
The primary purpose of this message is to announce successful establishment of the 31st Engineer Battalion Association website. The idea for a website was one of the recommendations put forth at our first reunion, 22-25 Oct 09 in Nashville.
Dennis Bair, our webmaster, has organized an excellent site which is easy to reach, navigate around, up-and-download photos and participate in all the associated pertinent and sundry things one does on a website. The website address is <http:www.31stEngineerBattalion.com> take a look!
The site is designed to share information and encourage communication, something we've not done well over the past 40+ years. I urge you to go to the site, check it out, then contribute your two cents in comments and/or photos -- often.
I've learned that 31st vets have sharp eyes, so train them hard on our new website and provide Dennis and/or me the feedback you think would be useful. Be as critical as you wish, as long as the desired outcome is to improve the site.
ITEM 2.
A concurrent recommendation at Nashville was to form a 31st Engineer Battalion Association, to provide organization and leadership services for veterans of the 31st and to raise funds for incidental costs, such as building the website. Most attendees at the reunion joined immediately and, if you are not yet a member, you are encouraged to join as well. Dues are $25 every two years -- monies, as I mentioned, will be used to pay for costs associated with future events, reunions, the website, and other valid causes as decided by the membership of the association.
Your membership in the association is important to the success of our endeavors for the future. To join, just send short note with your intentions to Phillip T. Douglas, 8465 Roberts Road, Ellicott City, MD 21043-6008 email <pdouglas47@verizon.net>).
This message is being sent to the veterans of HHC, 31st Engr Bn, who have email/internet access. Similar messages will be sent to veterans of the other battalion companies. As soon as possible, notices will be sent via USPS to those 31st veterans who do not have access to email/internet at home, but may be able to join in by using computers in their public library. Nevertheless, given all that, Mr. Murphy's always around and some may not get the message, so please do your utmost to spread the word about the association and the website to all other 31st vets with whom you have contact (or see out and about).
Wishing you all a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year!
On guard,
John Frye

Upcoming Reunions (All 31st Vets Invited)
20th Engineer Brigade will be at Branson, Mo. next year more details will be published as they are set in stone. The Indiana state flag held in this photo by Bob Marley (R) and Scott, his son (L)
has seen service in three combat areas -- first Vietnam in 1968 (31st Engr Bn),
Kosovo in 2004 and Iraq in 2008. Bob was with HHC, 31st Engr Bn and his son Scott
with 1-151 Inf.
For those who knew SGM Louis R. Gregoire, the battalion Sergeant Major when the 31st deployed to Vietnam from Fort Bliss, Texas in April 1968, it has been learned that SGM Gregoire passed away on 23 July 2007. He was buried with honors in Arlington Cemetery. Family resides in Mount Clemens, Michigan

We need 2011 Reunion Idea Help!!!!!!!!!!!!
During the successful 2009 reunion of 31st Engineer Battalion veterans and their spouses,
it was agreed to hold subsequent reunions every other year, with the next one being held in
2011. It is now time to begin planning that reunion and your input regarding location,
timing, and on-site activites is needed.
We need to spark ideas for what we can do when we gather in 2011.
Once a location is determined and dates nailed down, we'll be seeking the best possible
accommodations there, at the lowest possible price.
Your assistance is requested regarding the following:
1. Where to hold the 2011 reunion (city/state).
2. When to hold the 2011 reunion (month/days).
3. What activities/events you'd like to see at the reunion.
4. Whether or not you want to attend the reunion.
Please send your responses by the most convenient means within the next few days; the
results will be used as basis for the 2011 plan.
This email is being sent, in company chunks, to all known 31st Engr Bn veterans who
have email. To be sure that everyone gets the word, please pass the word.
Let me know if you have any questions.
On guard,
John Frye

Social Security Notice
Thanks to Mr. J.C.Hall an important tidbit when getting ready to retire.I don't know if I did this.DD FORM 214 -- SOCIAL SECURITY BENEFIT
Please share this with anyone who's had active duty service between
January 1957 and December 31, 2001 and is planning for retirement. In a
nutshell it boils down to this: You qualify for a higher social security
payment because of your military service, for active duty anytime from
1957 through 2001 (the program was ended 1 January 2002). You receive
up to $1200 per year of earnings credit at time of application - which
can make a substantial difference in social security monthly payments
upon your retirement.
If your service was between 1957 and 1967, you should bring your DD-214
to the Social Security Office and ask for this benefit to receive it.
For service between 1968 and 2001, your record was automatically
credited.
Please visit the following Soc Sec website for some additional details:
http://www.ssa.gov/retire2/military.htm
This is something to put in your files for when you apply for Social
Security down the road.
